•  hipaahitechAs of September 24, 2013, the fines for HIPAA violations will be doubled and HIPAA experts agree that smaller organizations such as dental offices will begin to get attention.  Fines of $100k have already been recorded for small practices.

Since the HITECH act of 2009, it has been illegal to allow unauthorized access to electronic protected health information (such as with un-encrypted email).  However, until now, little attention has been given to enforcing it for smaller organizations. A new law came into effect on March 26th, 2013 that increases fines and enhances HIPAA privacy, security, enforcement and breach notification rules. It is important for all small organizations to review their HIPAA policies and ensure they are in compliance.
